True Grit

While there are far too many remakes in the movie industry today than we want, it is quite rare when one of these compares and even out does the original. Directors Ethan and Joel Cohen have done just that with their remake of the 1969 True Grit directed by Henry Hathaway. Their new version stars young actress Hailee Steinfield and famous actor Jeff Bridges.
My friends and I decided to see this movie randomly out of boredom. To be honest we were not expecting much walking into the theatre, but we were soon surprised. True Grit was definitely one of my favorite movies that year. Even if you have seen the original film True Grit, this movie does not disappoint and remains very suspenseful throughout.
After finding out her father was murdered, 14 year old girl, Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfield), sets out to get revenge and find the killer. She seeks help and ends up hiring the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Mattie strongly insists to go along with Cogburn, however he is very skeptically and tells her to stay and he will go get her fathers killer. Against his orders and wishes, she ends up joining him in his journey into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney (Josh Brolin), her father’s killer. Later they are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants to capture Chaney for his own purposes. Throughout their journey they encounter lots of danger and many surprises.
The fact that this movie was not very predictable at all, was what I enjoyed most about it. The suspense was sustained throughout the entire movie. It kept my attention all the way until the end and kept me guessing what would be around the next corner of their journey. The actor selection was excellent as well. By far one of the best and my favorite performances of Jeff Bridges. I suspect if you did not know Jeff Bridges was starring in the film, you probably would not have even recognized him playing the grizzled, scruffy, mean marshal. Overall, the Cohen brothers have aced this remake, definitely a movie you don’t want to miss this year.
