It's Kind of a Funny Story...but not really

It's Kind of a Funny Story starring funny guy Zach Galifianakis and newcomer Keir Gilchrist is not exactly what you think it would be. Judging from the preview and the presence of Galifianakis, one would expect this Story to be another brainless comedy with very little insight into the human psyche, however this is no Hangover. It's tough to say whether or not, Galifianakis makes a good transition from member of "The Wolfpack" to suicidal mentor, but there is something quite endearing in the plot of It's Kind of a Funny Story. The story follows a teen named Craig (Keir Gilchrist) during his time in the mental ward of a hospital. Almost immediately a connection is made between Craig and Galifianakis' character, Bobby. The mentor-like dynamic and playful banter between these characters is one of the more enjoyable facets of the film. If there is any weak link in the chain it is definitely Keir Gilchrist as Craig. While Gilchrist's performance is nothing catastrophic, it also seems to be missing something. Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts, picks up the pieces nicely as Noelle, the love interest of Craig. In the end, you don't get what you expect, but I couldn't help being pleasantly surprised. No, it's not the stupid funny we've come to love from Galifianakis, and no, it won't win any awards, but the film is quite enjoyable, and at times quite funny.
